Friendswood Mustangs High School Baseball News

2011 Friendswood Mustang News - Regional Semifinalists for the 4th year in a row!

5/24 - Friendswood 1 Magnolia 7 - Mustangs just could not shake the funk from Thursday night. But they never quit. Some players were hurting, but they kept getting up and fighting. That is what defined this team. For some reason folks think they overachieved. What is overachieving? When a team outperforms expectations or abilities. Whose expectations?, certainly not these players - they knew they could to do this! Ability - not an issue. In many folks minds - we should have gone further, but we did not! Any way you cut it - a very good season for a very good team! Top 16 teams in the state of Texas 4A Baseball.

5/23 - Mustangs give one away After grabbing the lead back and overcoming 3 errors and 2 baserunning mistakes, the Mustangs could not overcome the last 2 errors and gave away the lead in the 7th. After the third out the Mustangs celebrated with a pile up on the Stings field, that felt good! Way to go FW.

Sophs won 8-7 and JV won 7-3 for a sweep of Texas City - always nice!

4/21 - Friendswood lost to Houston Christian 6-2 in a game where Coaches went with different lineups. We faced a good pitcher and did not hit the ball well, only 5 hits. Tyler Sullivan , Will Hibbs and Alan Cook pitched last nite. Tanner Mertel and Jared Gaspard both had really nice to the center field wall doubles.

The best news of the night was that Manvel beat Ball 12-11. All we have to do is take care of business next Friday night in TexasCity and we will be THE District Champs! Lets do this!

4/19 - Wow - what a great night at the ball park. After the fantastic pregame activities honoring our seniors and dedicating the field after Former Head Baseball coach Bobby Black, it was time for a Baseball game. Friendswood toughed out a huge 7-6 win over visiting Santa Fe. Jordan Wood notched the win. Tyler Sullivan had a huge night at the plate with 2 big doubles! Great win, Friendswood remains in first place! Friendswood clinched a playoff berth with the win, and the 1 or 2 seed.

Great game by both teams although a lot of errors were made. Friendswood starter Jordan Wood hit the lead off batter who would later score without a hit. Friendswood answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning when TJ Scott walked, stole second, and eventually scored. Santa Fe loaded the bases with one out in the second inning, but Wood managed to get out of the jam unscathed.

In the fourth, Tyler Sullivan drove in Jared Gaspard and Allen Cook on a double that got him to third base after an outfield error. Andrew Cook followed with a double to push the lead to three, and it became 5-1 after another Santa Fe outfield error.

Sullivan had another RBI-double off the wall in center field in the fifth to make it 6-1.

In the top of the sixth, Wood started to tire and Santa Fe jumped on him. Chase Schroeder had a lead-off home run, and three batters later, Andrew Yerrell drove in two on a single that made the score 6-4. Friendswood finally brought relief pitcher Will Hibbs with Wood at about 110 pitches, one out and the tying run at the plate. Hibbs got a K and a ground out to end the inning without any more runs being scored.

Friendswood got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead into the seventh. Hibbs walked the first batter on a couple of very close calls. The next batter up hit a hard grounder to short that looked like a double play ball. But for the second time in the game, the ball hit the infield lip and bounced by the shortstop's head for a hit. The next batter walked on a full count, and Friendswood brought in Jairus Alexander with no outs and the bases loaded. The first Indian batter he faced grounded to third, but instead of throwing home for a 5-2-3 double play, the third baseman chased the runner from third a couple of steps and tagged him out. The next Santa Fe batter hit a high chopper to third with the throw going to second for a force out, allowing one run to score. Santa Fe's leadoff hitter Yerrell came to the plate with runners on the corners and two outs. A pitch in the dirt let the tying run advance to second. With a 2-2 count, Yerrell laced a fast ball past a diving Kevin Rhodes at second base. Rhodes managed to tip the ball, but it looked like both runs would score. Center fielder TJ Scott scooped up the ball and fired a lazer to home. The throw was a little high, but easily beat the runner. Catcher Jordan Bolton made a nice catch and tag to end the game. It was an awesome finish to a very exciting game.

We had our biggest crowd of the year last night with senior night and a ceremony to name the new field after former coach Bobby Black. This helped to add to the drama.

We had more folks just watching than we have had in the past.  We sold over 350 meals.  Great start to the season.
